David Strong

May 12, 1952 - Sept. 24, 2025

CHASSELL — David Rand Strong, 73, of Chassell, died on Sept. 24, 2025. Dave was born in Hancock on May 12, 1952, to Alfred and Esther (Niemi) Strong, and attended Ripley School.

Dave graduated from Hancock High School before studying mathematics at Michigan Tech University.

A life-long learner, Dave completed several degrees from Michigan Tech including at least two Master’s degrees, although no one could ever keep up with the true number. He began his career teaching high school math and physics in Kimberly, Wisconsin, before teaching math at Hancock High School for six years.

Dave spent most of his career at Michigan Tech from 1980-2012, first in the financial aid office and then as a senior programmer/analyst. After retiring from Michigan Tech, he worked for University of Michigan, Flint as a financial aid systems manager until 2019.

Dave was married to Jacalyn Dorvinen on Jan. 1, 1977, and they celebrated 48 years together.

Dave was strong in family and faith. He was a life-long member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and served as an usher and reader for 58 years.

He was his children’s biggest fan and supporter, and his grandchildren were his joy. “Papa” was always up for side-by-side rides and the first one to volunteer for swimming with the kids.

A proud member of the community, Dave was active in many organizations including the Chassell Lions Club, Hancock All-School Reunion planning, Huskies Club, MTU Film Board

Advisor, and the MTU Blue Line Club.

He could be found doing things he loved best: on the lake, at the Simar Manor “hunting” camp, at any hockey game, on the pickleball court, or spending a few months enjoying the sunshine in The Villages, Florida.

Dave was a well-known aficionado of 60’s music and trivia, or both on a good day. As a silver lining, local radio station listeners will be happy to know they now have a chance at winning daily trivia contests.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Wilmer and Agnes Dorvinen; and sister-in-law, Theresa Dorvinen.

Dave is survived by his wife, Jackie; children, Darcy (Monique) and Abbey (Chris Pettinelli); grandchildren, Cora, Rian, Kasen, and Aiden; brother, Ron (Joyce) and family; brothers-in-law, Mike Dorvinen, Joe (Kathy) Dorvinen, Tom Dorvinen; and sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Lloyd) Abdelnour, Nannetta (Jerry) Daniels, Cindy Dorvinen, Kathy (Mike) Bradley, Christine (Ken) Fisher, Brenda Dorvinen; and many nieces and nephews. He leaves a big hole in their lives, and will be dearly missed by his many family members, friends, church, and community.

Services will be Monday, Sept. 29, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hancock. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., with funeral services at 12 p.m. Donations in memoriam can be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or the Chassell Lions Club.

Dave’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to his “hunting” buddies for everything: Don Morin, Bob Perrault, Pete Wickley, Zip Parker, Richard Salani, and Bill Largent.

Knowing he spent his last days at one of his favorite places with his closest friends has brought comfort to the family.
