SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) – Officials say they have extended the estimated time a navigation lock at Sault Ste. Marie will be closed for emergency repairs.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Detroit District said Monday it expects the MacArthur Lock will reopen on or about Aug. 19. Officials said early last week they expected the lock would be closed at least 10 days.

The lock was closed July 29 following mechanical problems, and the Corps says it determined the gates weren’t closing properly. Staffers at the Soo Locks complex are making repairs.
