Take bickering break to thank veteran today

Let’s face up to the fact that we live in a divided country right now, and the 2016 presidential election has brought the ugliness to the surface: Protest marches against the president-elect in the streets. Minorities getting verbally threatened and physically assaulted. Women getting sexually harassed.

These incidents are really happening, according to The Associated Press, Reuters and other media…oh, that’s right – some people out there don’t believe “mainstream media” and get their news from online cesspools of partisan propaganda. For those out there living in the real world, these incidents are really happening.

It seems like an opportune moment for everyone on both sides to take a collective breath and be reminded of something we all can agree upon – well, maybe not every single one of us but certainly a super-majority, using the parlance of the tme.

Today is Veterans Day, a day to honor and thank all those men and women who have sacrificed of themselves to preserve, protect and defend our freedoms.

Veterans Day honors all those who served in any capacity of military service to this country, including those amazing Americans like Jean Eckerberg of Atlantic Mine, a member of the Women’s Army Corps who served in Korea.

In September Eckerberg was among a group of Yooper veterans who participated in an Honor Flight to tour monuments and sites recognizing their wartime service in the Korean War and World War II.

Veterans are “made” Americans. For their service in the cause of freedom, all veterans deserve our thanks, esteem and respect and more, including lifetime health care of superior quality.

If not for their service, there would be no country to fight each other about. So take a break from the political war to personally thank a veteran today.
