In our opinion
A DMG editorial
We’re at the halfway point of the month of July, which means, for all intents and purposes, we’ve reached the halfway point of the summer season. Let us not bemoan that summer is half over, but rather embrace all that lies ahead. And looking forward, what lies ahead is music, lots of great music.
The Houghton Summer Slam concert series, organized by Good Times music, continues to draw big crowds with an eclectic collection of local performers. Next up tomorrow night is the high energy cover band Split Shyft. Still to come this summer, through Aug. 20 are evenings of jazz, country rock, bluegrass and more.
Across the canal, the City of Hancock’s Friday night concerting series “Canal Rock” has indeed been rocking. This Friday, fresh from last weeks rocking performance on the Houghton waterfront, Bling Crosby crosses the canal to rock the north side. Hancock continues the Friday night fun through Aug. 8.
Laurium’s Daniell Park Concerts are held on Thursdays through Sept. 11. This week, you won’t be able to sit still as Jim and Teri Enrietti offer polkas and more. Upcoming concerts feature, jazz, blues, rock, country and more.
Also on Thursdays and a bit further north, Copper Harbor’s Performances in the Park from 7-9 features a wide array of musical offerings. This week, Uncle Floyd, comprised of college professors, takes the stage in Donny Kilpela Memorial Park. Concerts continue through Aug. 26th.
The L’Anse Waterfront Concert series adds to the challenge of decided what to do on Thursdays. This week, the concert features a preview of this weekend’s Aura Jamboree. Upcoming concerts feature pop standards, bluegrass, Western swing, country rock, Celtic sounds and more.
All of the above weekly concerts are free and open to the public.
As mentioned the Aura Jamboree is this Friday and Saturday. More than three dozen acts will perform 15 minute sets of a crowd pleasing array of Americana and more. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for teens 13-17 and children 12 and under are free.
A fitting end to a super summer of music is the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival Aug. 22 & 23 at the Porkies. Among the performers are Buckwheat Zydeco Jr. The Slambovian Circus of Dreams, Erik Koskinen, Charlie Parr and much more. Tickets and more information can be found at porkiesfestival.org.
We think we’ve made our point. Each summer proves the Keweenaw is brining with outstanding musicians and many changes to experience them.
Enjoy!
