Portage hospital saved my life

To the editor:

Recently, I was interviewed by Rick Allen on Copper Country Today. We were talking about the Houghton County Medical Care Facility, and I expressed the opinion that the quality of health care declines in the face of privatization. I’m writing to say that I was out of turn in that statement, repeating what I had heard rather than being adequately informed.

Since then, I’ve learned that the quality of health care can be good or not as good across the country in the different situations of municipal, for-profit, and not-for-profit. Apparently, once again, it comes down to company culture plus the individual’s commitment to their job.

I can see how people that work at Portage Health Systems would be upset with me over this statement. If I worked there, I would be too, and I hope they will accept my apology.

Back in 2011, I had a severe infection and UP Health System – Portage hospital saved my life. Even though I was in a very weakened state, I was surprised about — and took a great deal of comfort from — the care and concern that I was shown from people in every position at the hospital.

Disparaging your effort is the last thing I would ever want to do.
