Change not necessary

To the editor:

I have enjoyed reading the Daily Mining Gazette for many years. The Gazette does a great job. I really love the articles of Graham Jaehnig on the past history of the Keweenaw. He has done so much research in order to write these articles. I also like the great photography and articles of the new sports editor, Adam Niemi.

However, there is something that has been bothering me recently and I just want to have my viewpoint heard. I read in the Gazette that a male Michigan Tech student was going to be a candidate for the Winter Carnival Queen Competition and he was. Really? Does the Blue Key organization have any common sense? Then I heard TV6 News again about the male candidate. Queen candidates and queens are for females. The requirement for a queen is female.

I have talked to several people about this topic and everyone agreed with me that it was crazy to include a male candidate for the queen competition. If Michigan Tech wants to change things, include a king position for male students only. Hopefully next year, this new concept will be changed and MTU will get the respect of the common person.
