Coastal Cleanup thank you

To the editor:

Last weekend the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District and the Stewards of the Bete Grise Preserve sponsored a clean up in cooperation with the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach Annual Coastal Clean Up. A great team of volunteers picked up trash at the Bete Grise North public beach, Jackson Park, the Bete Grise Preserve from Oliver Bay to the Mendota Channel and the Joseph and Mary Lizzadro Lakeshore Preserve. Volunteers of all ages including students from middle school, high school, college and the Michigan Tech Wetlands Club showed up to help. In a matter of hours over 100 pounds of trash was collected by these energetic volunteers. Many thanks to Lisa B., Mark Graef, Bob Haralson, Sue Haralson, Hazen Keinath, Stephanie Krieger, Dylan Lane, Scott Larson, Leiland Paradis, Maddison Paradis, Alex Siira, Steve Siira, Dick Streeter, Steve Trynoski and Nick Wilson for showing up and cleaning up!

Our beaches and parks saw heavy use this summer, but thanks to everyone who is careful to take their trash with them, the beaches continue to be cleaner each year. Cigarette butts and filters (over 260) are the most frequently found trash item on beaches. Along the park roadsides, over 75 beverage cans and bottles were retrieved. It is always depressing to find dirty diapers, food wrappers and other items spoiling public parks for the next visitor.

Thank you to everyone who disposes of their own trash properly and to those who help keep our beaches and parks clean all year long.
