Speed limit change

To the editor:

Years ago, the speed limit on many highways was 65 mph during the day and those same signs changed to 55 mph at night. My question is why not now? What happened to change this?

I have talked to our state police and they said our roads were safer when the speed limit was at 65 during the day. Our state representatives, driving long hours and miles in the U.P. back and four to Lansing, also agree.

I have called and written to Mr. Paul Ajegba, MDOT director for the state of Michigan, but I have not heard back from him in over a year.

Just a week ago, I was driving the 55 limit on M-26 when I was passed on a double yellow line near Ripley by someone going about 70 mph.

Another example of 55 mph is at Covington Junction. When you get to U.S. 141, it changes to 65 mph. Why the change there? Also, from Harvey on U.S. 41 to the eastern end of the U.P. on M-28, along with M-129, it is 65 mph. What not on our other highways in the U.P.?

U.S. 41 starts in the Keweenaw and ends in the at the southern tip of Florida, so where does it change and why shouldn’t most of it, except when going through towns and residential areas, be 65 mph?

Let’s think about it and get MDOT to change it back.
