Bergman residency questioned

To the Editor:

“No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.” (U.S. Constitution, Article I, section 2, clause 2)

In The Mining Journal, Nov. 16, 2020, a letter to the editor from William Jorns has pointed out a questionable Jack Bergman Watersmeet residence addresses some of which are not homes and Mr. Bergman living mostly in St. Francisville, Louisiana, except for brief summer periods.

Is it permitted to have only sometime residents to represent us in Washington? Recently, North Carolina has discredited the voter qualifications of former U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows because of faked residency (Joel Burgess, Ashville Citizen Times, 13 April, 2022)

Perhaps our representative is encouraged to provide a (questionable) resident address. Is Bergman a legal registered voter in Michigan? The Upper Peninsula is a unique place, with unusual problems and opportunities we need someone who understands our situation.

We ask the congressman to explain his residency clearly. How many days a year has he lived in Watersmeet? At what address?

The next election approaches. When may we know whether we may have a carpetbagger rep, as has been alleged repeatedly by our community? Wesome of deserve the truth, clearly expressed.
