"Congressman Bergman?" To the Editor, Where is “our” Congressman Jack Bergman when we need him to remember and act on the oath he’s taken as an academy cadet, military officer, and now congressman, to preserve and defend the Constitution of the United States? He’s AWOL as there is no doubt that the Constitution is being trampled by Trump, his henchmen, and masked goon squads. The Constitution gives Congress the power to impeach Trump and remove him from office for unspecified high crimes and misdemeanors. Surely the Framers of the Constitution would consider wanton murder of ...

More than two sexes Editor: On December 9, 2025, the Houghton County Board of Commissioners considered a resolution declaring that there are only two sexes: female (XX) and male (XY). Hundreds of citizens showed up, some to support the resolution, most to protest it (including several doctors). Wisely, the Commissioners voted this resolution down, four to one. On Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump issued a similar executive order, which reads in part: “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. . . . Under my direction, the ...

Editor's Note: We received this delightful letter to the editor earlier this week. Our clerk made contact with the school and the teacher in Virginia and determined it is legitimate. We encourage DMG readers to help this young person out. Dear People of the Great State of Michigan, Hello! I am a third-grade student in Northern Virginia. Our class is learning about the United States, and I will be teaching our school about the state of Michigan. In late May, I will create a display for our State Fair that I hope will make you proud. Although I have gathered facts about your state ...

We deserve a Congresswoman like Callie Barr Dear Editor, NY Times Columnist David Brooks said goodbye to his column on January 30th. He wrote a final column on his departure and it is a good read. I was particularly struck by this hopeful passage, “I still believe we’re driven not only by the selfish motivations but also by the moral ones — the desire to pursue some good, the desire to cooperate, to care for one another and to belong. Life is about movement, and the flourishing life is the same eternal thing, some man or woman striving and struggling in service to some ideal.” ...

Reform Needed Editor:: Alex Pretti, a 37 year old, U.S. citizen living in an open carry state, was shot 10 times and killed a by a Border Patrol agent or agents after being disarmed. Kristi Noem, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security offered a chilling defense of the agents’ action, claiming that it was acting in accordance with their training. A federal judge appointed by Ronald Reagan has found it necessary to issue an order forbidding the federal government from altering or destroying evidence related to Pretti’s death. Attorney General Pam Bondi has offered ...

Fact vs Fiction Editor: Our firstborn child had imaginary friends, and I encouraged this fiction as it brought him joy in a rather dull adult world until he had a little brother who eventually was old enough to be a friend. Santa was another fiction in our family, and I remember the day, in the middle of the summer, when we were alone, that the big brother asked me if Santa is real. We decided to keep the fantasy alive for the sake of the little brother. When do stories become harmful? When does the truth set us free? Remember the fable of the swindlers who tricked the townspeople ...
