LAKE LINDEN – The Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes dominated the volleyball court Thursday night as they downed the Baraga Vikings 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-19).

LL-H head coach Mandy Perreault said her team’s service and defense won the game.

“Our strong serves and just putting the ball over the net consistently didn’t allow them to set up their offense,” she said. “We were able to keep them off balance and that was the game plan.”

In the first set, Lakes senior Mya Ghazale opened with an ace. The Lakes (9-2) then moved out to a 9-2 lead never looked back holding the Vikings(4-5) to just 12 points in their 25-12 win.

“We had way too many passing errors,” said Baraga’s head coach Corey Pietila. “The girls complained about the low ceiling but that is no excuse for not being able return a ball.”

The second set looked much like the first with the Lakes taking the lead and holding onto it with a 25-15 win.

The third set was Baraga’s best as they took their first lead of the night at 2-1 and 8-7. However, the Lakes bounced back and finished the set and game with a 25-19 win.

Perreault said she was pleased with her team’s resilience.

“They are keeping their composure and bouncing back quicker,” she said. “They are enjoying the fight more without collapsing.”

Senior Jamie Hendrickson and Camaryn Crouch led the Lakes offense with six aces. Melissa Wagner followed with five. Wagner and Crouch both had five kills as well.

Perreault said she has been quite pleased with the play of Hendrickson and that showed last night.

“She has settled into her role as a setter in the back row and a middle hitter in the front row,” Perreault said. “Our play has elevated because she is doing more with blocking and contributing with kills, and that has taken some pressure off others to get the points. We now have five girls who can score and not just one or two and they have all done a good job in contributing as a team.”

L’Anse sweeps Dollar Bay, 3-0

The L’Anse Purple Hornets swept Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 on Thursday.

L’Anse won by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-17.

“These girls have to get a little bit hungrier for the win,” L’Anse head coach Callie Budweg said. “I want these girls to crave the win so bad that they just blow teams out of the water.”

Alayna Waara led L’Anse with 11 kills and four aces. Brynn VanBuren had 28 assists. Addison Mattson had eight kills and 23 digs. Kaitlyn Voskuhl had six kills and 18 digs.

“With only one game this week, it was a good confidence booster for the girls after a tough loss the week before,” Budweg said.

ALSO: Jeffers swept Bessemer 3-0 on Thursday. The Jets won by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-20. Brenna Hill and Mara Pietila had five aces.
