Michigan Tech men host Ferris State

HOUGHTON — After two weeks on the roadthat has culminated in a five-game winning steak, The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team is back home this weekend for a two-game matchup against the Ferris State Bulldogs.

The Huskies (6-1) are coming off a 55-46 victory on Tuesday against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.

Tip off is set for 5 p.m. on Friday at the Wood Gym and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

“Any rival game like Tuesdays is going to be tough, said Tech head coach Kevin Luke. “However, I thought we could have played better. I thought we lacked an intensity at the beginning of the game. We are still trying to figure out all we can be.”

They will face a Ferris State team (3-4) that has one of the best shooters in the GLIAC in Walt Kelser. The six-foot, senior guard is averaging more than 22 points per game. That is close to one third of the team’s total average of 65 points per game. The Bulldogs are shooting 42 percent from the field and 32 percent from three-point range.

“Ferris was picked number one in the GLIAC (North Division) in pre-season polls,” said Luke. “They are well coached and are very capable at home or away. They are strong on the glass and will come out with a full-court press which we will need to be ready for.”

Meanwhile, Tech is averaging 68 points per game. They are shooting 47 percent from the field and 43 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Junior Owen White leads the scoring drive with 23 points per game. He is followed by Trent Bell who put in 14 points per game.

“This is a tough schedule this year with back-to- back games,” Luke said. “You have to make slight adjustments and be mentally tough for that second game. You need a longer bench and we are getting there. We have the ingredients. We just need to make it happen.”
