Dollar Bay gets scrappy win over W-M

DOLLAR BAY — As victories go, Dollar Bay’s 42-34 triumph over Wakefield-Marenisco Tuesday night was about as ugly as they come.
But DBHS coach Jesse Kentala isn’t about to return it any time soon.
“Yeah, it certainly wasn’t pretty,” Kentala. “But any win is a good win and we’re going to take it the same way as the others.”
The outcome left the Blue Bolts at 5-2 (4-1 in the Copper Mountain Conference) record on the season, and came on the heels of a tough 70-64 road win at Republic-Michigamme Monday.
“I don’t know what it was,” Kentala said. “Wakefield does a good job of spreading out their defense and shadowing shooters. But I thought we had some good looks, they just weren’t dropping.”
Bolts scoring ace Devin Schmitz had his lowest scoring input of the season with seven points. But fellow scoring partner Jaden Janke was good for a game-leading 18 points.
Jacob Iacono had a strong game with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds.
“Jake (Iacono) had a nice game after playing an exceptional game (17 points) Monday,” Kentala noted. “He picked us up on defense and that was the one thing we did well tonight.”
W-M skipper Terry Fetters said his team got too much in a hurry on offense.
“We made a ton of turnovers because of that,” Fetters pointed out. “But Dollar Bay’s defense probably had something to do with that as well.”
The locals managed a 12-11 lead after one quarter as Janke and Schmitz combined for 11 points.
The inside play of Jacob Suzik kept the Cards close in the second frame.
But Iacono nailed a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to boost his team into a 24-19 lead.
Both sides continued to struggle in the second half, with the Bolts managing to keep a basket or two ahead.
It wasn’t until a pair of Janke treys made it 40-30 with 3:07 remaining that the Blue Bolts could relax.
Janke added seven rebounds to go along with his point total, while Schmitz and Iacono each had four steals.
W-M, now 4-4 on the season (2-2 in the league),
was led by Suzik’s 17 points. Shane Cole added 14 points and a good floor game. Only three Cards scored in the contest.
“I thought those two played well,” Fetters said. “We just didn’t have a whole of support for them.”
The Bolts have an important league date at home with Chassell next Tuesday.
