LL-H girls take 1st at Dome meet

MARQUETTE — It was a solid outing for the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls’ track team Monday as it earned top honors in the Superior Central Invitational at Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome.

The Lakes, who took first in five events, scored 84 points. They were followed by Cedarville 77 and Stephenson 58.

“I was really pleased,” said LL-H coach Gary Guisfredi. “The girls had some real good races. The kids are working hard and we had pretty good depth today. It had been a while since we won the Dome meet”

Laura Lyons led the Lakes with victories in long jump at 15 feet, five inches and the 400-meter dash in 65.6 seconds.

Mariah Wilmer copped the 800 (2:43.84). Jamie Hendrickson won high jump (5-0) and took third in the 400 (1:08.9) and MacKenzie LePage copped pole vault (7-6).

LL-H’s Sophie Codere placed second in discus (84-7) and third in shot put (29-10 3/4).

This marked the second meet this season for the Lakes, who opened in the Michigan Tech Indoor Invitational April 6.

“I think the meet at Tech helped us,” said Guisfredi. “The kids were able to get a taste of competition. I think the (Copper Mountain) conference in the western end has some good athletes.”

Chassell sophomore Lela Rautiola, fueled by a late surge, captured the 1600 at 5:59.54. She was followed by Cedarville’s Emma Bohn (6:10.4) and Cassidy Barr (6:25.84).

“Emma helped me a lot because I sometimes don’t push myself as hard as I should,” said Rautiola. “Since we don’t have a track at our school, this gives us a lot of practice on one. It helps to get this meet in. My lungs started burning a little from the air, but this is better than being outside today (in windy conditions and temperatures near 30).”

Chassell’s Meg Hokenson was runner-up in high jump (4-8).

Ontonagon’s Fahren Kolpack was second in the 400 (1:08.38) and teammare Holly Wardynski and Pickford’s Clare Cottle shared third in pole vault (7-0).

The Bessemer boys won with 101 1/3 points, followed by Pickford 90 and Engadine 54. Ontonagon was the highest area finisher in sixth at 33.

The Speedboys collected eight firsts en route to their first title in the Dome.

“We’re looking for good things this year,” said Bessemer coach Mark Mazzone. “We have some depth. We had kids in every grade give us quality points today. We need to keep everybody healthy and keep working.”

Bessemer’s Isaiah Aili won the 1600 (4:50.06) and helped the winning 1600 and 3200 relays.

Dollar Bay’s Brendan LeClaire was runner-up in the 1600 (4:59.49) and third in the 800 (2:14.38).

Ontonagon got a first on Micah Blake’s toss of 113-10 in discus. Teammate Jaden Weisinger took second in long jump (19-0).
