Finlandia football drops opener to Concordia 42-6

MEQUON, Wis. — Turnovers were the key as the Finlandia University football team (0-1) lost 42-6 to Concordia Wisconsin (1-0), Saturday aafternoon at Tomasini Stadium.

Concordia got things started off with a bang as Isaiah Tennette returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a score. After trading possessions, Finlandia drove down to the CUW 39-yard line.

Freshman De’Llontae Johnson completed a pass for 12 yards and ran for 10 to highlight the drive. The drive stalled and the Lions had to punt. FinnU forced the Falcons to punt; however the returned was fumbled.  

Concordia recovered at their five-yard line and would score. CUW took advantage of three turnovers in the second quarter to score 28 points. In the second half, Finlandia held the Falcons to just 141 yards in total offense.

In the fourth quarter, Johnson completed passes to junior Tyler Kangas and freshman Armani Spates to get to the CUW 14. Following a sack, Johnson scampered 20 yards for the score.

For Finlandia, sophomore Justin Woolever had a career-high of 105 yards on the ground. It was the sixth 100-yard game in school history. Johnson threw for 115 yards and ran for 57 for 172 yards in total offense. 

Defensively, junior Jaavid Love had 10 tackles with three for a loss and Kangas collected 10 tackles as well. Junior Dillon Hueckstaedt had a career-high 10 tackles. Kangas ended up averaging 44.9 yards on seven punts. That included a school record 63-yarder.

For Concordia, Aaron Nixon was 15-of-21 for 170 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Mirasola led the ground game with 84 yards.

Finlandia opens up the home season, Saturday, Sept. 9 against Lawrence. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
