Finlandia downs Mount Mary Sunday

HANCOCK — Finlandia seniors Haley Makela and Kallan Morris went out in style as the Finlandia University women’s soccer team defeated the Mount Mary Blue Angels, 9-0, Sunday morning at McAfee Field.

It was the duo’s last home games of their Finlandia careers.

Finlandia’s head coach Jordan Andrews was happy to see Morris get a goal in her last home game.

“She is just a great all-around athlete,” he said. “I could put her anywhere on the field and she would succeed.”

He added that Haley Makela had never played soccer before she joined the team three years ago.

“She has such a lively spirit on the field and has stopped a lot of balls for us,” said Andrews.

The Lions (9-1-1 overall) dominated the game from the first touch of the soccer ball. They controlled the ball in Blue Angels (1-10 overall) territory for more than 89 minutes of the contest. They peppered Blue Angels goalie Hanna Rose with more than 75 shots – 36 of them on goal.

Just 12 minutes in, Finlandia’s Alexia Gonzalez broke the goal line on a header from Kristen L’Esperance which she centered from the far left side. The Lions scored twice more in the next five minutes and their scoring machine never really slowed down.

Freshman Daisia Knowles and L’Esperance had two goals each. L’Esperance had a school record five assists with freshman Addie Budzinski and Gonzales tallying two each.

Goals also came from junior Molly Berg, Morris, freshman Rylie Steele and junior Jessica Tosh.

“They work the ball well,” said Andrews. “Everyone is contributing and playing up to their ability.”

Finlandia hits the road, Saturday taking on Rockford in Milwaukee at 1 p.m.
