College Basketball: Finlandia women rout St. Scholastica, 78-58
HANCOCK — Whenever St. Scholastica made a move on Finlandia University in Tuesday’s women’s basketball game, either Katie Lundeen or Carsyn Osterman had a ready answer.
Lundeen totaled a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Osterman notched 18 points, 6 assists and three steals in a 78-58 win at Paavo Nurmi Gymnasium.
“I thought for the most part we played well as a team,” Lions coach Mariah LaPointe-Dunham said. “I think our up-and-down transition really killed them (Saints), especially in certain parts of the game where both teams were tired.”
St. Scholastica — trailing by as many as 22 points in the second portion of the contest — whittled the margin down to nine points with about five minutes left.
But Osterman, the former Baraga High standout, knocked down a clutch triple and set up Lundeen for a layup to restore order at 64-50.
“Again, Carsyn (Osterman) and Katie Lundeen had really great games. And we need them to do that to have a shot at winning games,” LaPointe-Dunham said.
Now 3-5 on the season, Finlandia started out strongly last night. A 27-18 lead was sparked by the inside play of Lundeen, last week’s ACHA Player of the Week.
Hancock’s Taylor Pertile also hit a pair of baskets in the early going.
The FU lead swelled to 48-32 by intermission as pressure defense rattled the Wisconsin team.
Kaylee Kennedy led a Saints rally in the second that was also aided by Lundeen drawing an early third quarter fourth foul.
LaPointe-Dunham said foul problems to her ace center have been a concern.
“That’s three games in a row where Katie has gotten into foul problems,” she said. “We’re working on that and we’ve had to go to a smaller lineup to deal with it.”
Bailey Froberg (L’Anse) joined Pertile with nine points for the Blue and White. Mlley Berg added seven points and 3 steals in a solid showing.
Kennedy’s 17 points led CSS, while Christine Furey grabbed 11 rebounds.
