Women’s Basketball: Lundeen, Finlandia take down UW-River Falls 75-65

HANCOCK — When the going got tough for the Finlandia University women’s basketball team Saturday, the Lions knew where to go.

That came in the person of sophomore center Katie Lundeen, who helped her team rally to a 75-65 win over UW-River Falls at Paavo Nurmi Gym.

Lundeen tallied 21 of her game-high 29 points in the second half to help FU to its fifth win in 12 games.

“She (Lundeen) has a good idea of what to do once she gets the basketball,” Lions’ coach Mariah LaPointe-Dunham said. “She’s key part of our team.”

Sophomore guard Carsyn Osterman also played a big role in the triumph as Finlandia avenged an a loss to the Falcons just a week ago.

The former Baraga High standout filled the box score nicely by recording 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

“Carysn (Osterman) made some big plays in the final quarter,” her coach said. “She helped get the ball inside to (Lundeen) and they couldn’t handle her.”

The locals held the lead most of the opening two quarters before River Falls used a 10-2 spurt to a 36-32 halftime lead.

FU erased that with a 22-9 third quarter advantage to lead 54-45 with a quarter left in a game of runs.

Some accurate three-point shooting by Hailey DeSouza and Sydney Hein of the Falcons caused FU plenty of headaches.

“They (Falcons) have so many three-point shooters, it really caused defensive problems for us,” LaPointe-Dunham noted. “They’re all good outside shooters.”

Mariah Austin and reserve Casana Ryynanen (Houghton) each pitched in eight points, while Bailey Froberg added seven markers.

The 4-4 Falcons were led by DeSouza with 15 points on five treys. Crystal Pearson notched 14 more, while Hein and Lori Wardzynski (Ontonagon) divided 24 more.

Finlandia will meet Maranatha Baptist on the road this coming Saturday.
