Finlandia hockey falls to Northland

HANCOCK — It was 60 minutes of nonstop battling as the Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost 3-1 to Northland on Tuesday.

Finlandia (3-10-2) drew first blood as freshman Phil Schader scored a shorthanded goal. That made it 1-0 Lions at the 4:46 mark. Northland stepped up their attack and evened the game with just under four minutes left in the first period.

In the second period, junior Cale Markham fired a shot that was somehow saved by the Lumberjack goalie. Northland (4-10) then stunned FinnU with two goals in a two-minute stretch.

Finlandia refused to quit and had two really strong chances in the last five minutes of the second period just miss. The Lions had several good scoring opportunities in the third period; however they did not get the breaks.

Finlandia shut down the Lumberjacks on power plays not giving up any goals in five attempts.

Finlandia visits No. 11 Lake Forest at 8 p.m. Friday.
