Lions women win fourth straight game

DULUTH, Minn. — Junior Bailey Froberg was clutch in the stretch as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team took a wild 57-55 win over St. Scholastica on Wednesday night.

The win was Finlandia’s fourth in a row.

“This game was a program changer,” said head coach Mariah Dunham. “St. Scholastica is a great program coached by a great coach. For us to go to their place and be tough enough to handle beating a team three times shows a lot about our heart. Bailey (Froberg) didn’t a make a three all game, but she made it when it mattered. Big stops were made defensively when the game was on the line. Very proud of this team.”

Tied at 2-2 at the 9:14 mark of the first period, Finlandia (9-11) scored six straight points to lead 8-2. The Lions never gave up the lead or were tied until late in the fourth quarter.

St. Scholastica (5-12) remained scrappy staying within striking range. In the fourth quarter, twice Finlandia had leads of seven, only to see the Saints creep back in.

Finlandia seemed to have the game in control, up 52-47 with 3:06 to go. CSS scored five straight to tie the game at 52-52 at the 2:38 mark. The Lions got a free throw and St. Scholastica countered with a bucket and free throw.

That put the Saints up 55-53 with 22 seconds left. Froberg dropped in a triple bomb from the top of the arc. Finlandia was up 56-55 with 11 seconds. CSS turned the ball over and sophomore Carsyn Osterman hit a free throw to make it a two-point game with five seconds left. St. Scholastica missed at the buzzer and Finlandia had the win.

Finlandia sophomore Katie Lundeen had 16 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Carsyn Osterman had 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals.

Finlandia visits Bay College at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Men fall to Saints, 96-69

DULUTH, Minn. — Sophomore Joe Heinonen and junior Dylan Underwood scored in double-figures as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team (0-18) lost 96-69 to St. Scholastica (9-9), Wednesday night at Reif Gym.

“I always enjoy traveling with our women’s team. They bring great energy and enthusiasm, which we need to do,” Finlandia head coach Sam Casey said. “They brought to mind the words of one of the greatest women in American history, Maya Angelou. On resilience she said “I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it,” and on strength, she said “Nothing will work unless you do.” She was right on both counts and we stand in need of both strength and resilience as we continue to grow and battle for each other and for Finlandia, to become the best team that we can be, on and off the court.”

The first three minutes of the game, Finlandia and St. Scholastica battled on even terms. Up by four, the Saints went on a 13-2 run to lead 19-4 at the 14:22 mark.

The Lions gritted their teeth and reeled off seven straight points. Sophomore Tristan Johnston drove the lane and scored to make it 19-11 with 12:10 to go. CSS outscored FinnU 20-7 over the next five minutes to secure the game.

For Finlandia, Underwood had 26 points, nine rebounds, five assists and blocked two shots with six 3-pointers and Heinonen scored 12 points

For St. Scholastica, Collin Anderson had 18 points and Cade Goggleye scored 13.

Finlandia visits Bay College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
