College Hockey: Lions women fall to Trine

HANCOCK — It was 60 minutes of heart as the Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 4-2 to Trine, Friday night at Thunder Ice Arena.

For the first 17 minutes of the opening period, senior Annah Smiddy and Molly Scarborough put on a clinic. The two made amazing saves to keep the game scoreless.

At the 17:01 mark, Trine (8-10-4, 4-9-2 NCHA) managed to sneak one in for the 1-0 lead. With 27 seconds left, senior Kait Ryynanen found the back of the net to make it 1-1.

It took the Thunder just 54 seconds into the second period to take the lead back at 2-1. Finlandia (0-23, 0-15) gritted its teeth and at the 2:53 mark, sophomore Peyton Airaudi scored on a pass from junior Kylee Dyni.

That tied the contest at 2-2. Two minutes later, Trine made it 3-2. Just before the period ended, freshman Kylee Hopp had a goal robbed at the last moment. The Thunder scored in the third and held the Lions off.

On face-offs, sophomore Malone Hiebert and junior Abby Kolek had 11 wins each. Smiddy had 55 saves for the night.

Finlandia remains on the road 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, playing Trine.
