Perkins commits to Finlandia hockey

HANCOCK — Tyler Perkins (Janesville, Wis.) has committed to play for the Finlandia University men’s hockey team.

“I’m very excited to hit the ice for Finlandia in the fall and to get my education started at a great school. (Finlandia) Coach (Joe) Burcar reached out to me not long after the season ended and made it pretty easy for me to choose Finlandia as my next step,” Perkins said. “I’m already looking forward to getting to know the team I’ll be playing with for the next few years and to keep playing good hockey at a high level.”

Perkins, a right-handed forward, had a record-breaking two-year career for the Minnesota Mullets (USPHL Premier). In 2019-20, he was team captain and had 38 goals with 41 assists for 79 points. Perkins led the team in scoring and was ninth in the league.

“We’re excited to have Tyler Perkins join our school, community and program,” Burcar said. “He has scored at every level he has played at. Tyler brings character, a great work ethic and a skill level that will help us score as a team.”

Perkins finished as the all-time leading scorer in team history with 56 goals and 59 assists for 115 points. He helped the Mullets qualify for the playoffs both seasons.

“I’m really excited for Tyler. He’ll be joining a strong nucleus of returning players and what appears to be a solid recruiting class Coach Burcar has done a great job rebuilding his program,” Mullets head coach Chris Walby said. “Tyler is going to fit in right away with what (Coach Burcar) is doing and contribute immediately to the team’s success. He competes hard and is going to have an awesome collegiate career. Tyler has been incredible here for us, scoring so many big goals and making many big plays. I’ll miss that, but I’m so excited for him and to follow his next chapter.”
