Lions men’s basketball gives out team awards

HANCOCK — The 2019-20 Finlandia University men’s basketball team released their award winners.

Dylan Underwood was named the Lions’ offensive player of the year. River Shumate was named the team’s Sixth Man. Joe Heinonen was named Most Improved. Kaleb Kirksey was named Defensive Player of the Year. Jacob Oom won the Lion Award.

Underwood averaged 16.61 points, 5.21 assists, 5.52 rebounds and 2.13 steals while shooting 75% from the line over 23 games. He scored in double figures 17 times with eight games at least 20 points. Underwood was a four-time ACAA Player of the Week and had a 3.28 grade-point average majoring in Business.

Shumate averaged 6.2 points while shooting 38.7% on 3-pointers and 71.7% from the line in 24 games. He scored 22 points with five rebounds and five assists including a shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime vs. Aurora on Nov. 23.

Heinonen averaged 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and blocked 1.1 shots over 24 games. He improved his scoring average by more than six points and rebound average by almost three rebounds. Heinonen caught fire in the second half of season hitting double figures in 10 of the final 12 games.

Kirksey averaged 9.6 points, seven rebounds and blocked 1.03 shots over 24 games. He led the team in total rebounds and defensive rebounds (5.13) and was second in blocked shots. Kirksey had at least six rebounds in 17 games with seven in double digits.

Oom, the heart and soul of the team, averaged 7.6 points and 2.3 assists in 23 games. He had the second triple double in program history (17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) against Great Lakes Christian on Feb. 18.
