Finlandia winter sports looking at Feb. 5 start

Finlandia University is awaiting more guidance and recommendations from the NCAA, as well as local and state officials.

Finlandia said in a press release that university officials will meet Jan. 4 for “more fact-gathering” before deciding on whether to green-light its winter sports programs for competition.

The Lions plan to hold men’s and women’s hockey and basketball seasons to begin no earlier than Friday, Feb. 5, likely with a limited number of games.

“With the landscape of COVID-19 constantly changing, we need to wait as long as possible to give our student-athletes an opportunity to compete,” said athletic director Curtis Wittenberg.

Finlandia, competing in the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference for men’s and women’s basketball, said there will be no conference play, regular season or conference championships. The Lions’ men’s and women’s hockey teams, competing in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association, said the conference is working on a limited schedule and championships.
