Underwood, Finlandia top Gogebic, 94-87

HANCOCK — As the lone senior on the Finlandia University men’s basketball team, Dylan Underwood has seen it all.

But Underwood played a major role in his team’s 94-87 win over Gogebic Community College Wednesday at Paavo Nurmi.

Underwood dumped in a game-high 31 points and nailed five key free throws down the stretch as FU won for the first time this winter.

“I can’t say enough about Dylan (Underwood) play,” Lions coach Allen Dehority said. “I’m just happy that we got a win for him tonight.”

Trailing virtually the entire contest, the Lions took the lead for good at 81-80 with four minutes to play as Underwood drilled two straight treys.

The locals were able to move the lead put to six points as River Shumate knocked down a basket and Frank Winds added a three-pointer.

“We got contributions from everyone who came in there,” Dehority said. “I thought River (Shumate) made some big plays and there were several guys who stood out in other ways. It was a team win.”

Shumate added 14 points and 5 assists for the 1-9 winners, while Noah Prestia put in nine.

Joe Heinonen grabbed a team high 10 rebounds and also netted seven markers.

Marien Williams led the Zamson with 21 points. Sincere Keys tossed in 20 more and nabbed 10 boards.

The Lions will host an explosive Riverland Community College team Friday night in the season finale.
