Portage Lake Golf Course set to open Friday; carts unallowed

HOUGHTON — Starting Friday, the Portage Lake Golf Course will be open to the public.

While April 23 is not the earliest start date on record, it is close, as the record was set in 2012 when the course opened on April 4.

By comparison, the last season started on Saturday, May 2.

Carts will not be allowed in the course until both weather and course conditions improve after two weeks of snow and rain.

Annual passes, punch cards, daily greens fees, and information about lessons, leagues, and tournaments are all currently available in person at the Pro Shop or online at mtu.edu/golfcourse/. Season passes include the amenities of guest passes, merchandise discounts, complimentary pull carts as well as free or discounted plays at other local courses.

Discounted passes are available for spouses and children to make golf affordable for the entire family.

As a reminder to players, pass holder’s children 11 years old and younger play for free when accompanied with an adult pass holder. Should the child wish to play without a parent, the child will either have to purchase green fees or a discounted season pass.

For those who have not yet bought their passes, payroll deduction is available for Michigan Tech employees. For patrons who are not Michigan Tech employees, we offer a comfortable payment plan option. Feel free to stop by and inquire for details.

Portage Lake will be offering reduced greens fees through the month of May with 18 Holes walking at $25 and riding at $39. A nine hole round walking is $15 and $23 with a cart.

Visit the PLGC website for more information, or reach them at golf course@mtu.edu, 487-2641, or visit in person at the Pro Shop.
