Lions drop a pair on the road

APPLETON, Wis. — The Finlandia University volleyball team (4-7) lost twice on Day 2 of the Lawrence Invitational, Saturday at Alexander Gym. The Lions fell to Maranatha Baptist (2-9) and MSOE (8-5).

Maranatha Baptist – L, 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-14, 16-14)

In the first set, Maranatha Baptist raced out to an early 5-1 lead. Finlandia roared back to tie the set at 10-10. Following a timeout, freshman Emily Wilson got a kill which started a run of six straight points to effectively end the set.

Set two a teeter-totter affair until 9-8. The Sabercats scored four straight points to lead 13-8. The Lions forced an error and freshman Emma DeKiewiet served up four straight points for a 14-13 lead.

The score went back and forth until 21-20, MBU. DeKiewiet smashed the ball off the block and served up four straight points to finish the set.

The third set was also a tight affair with FinnU taking a 15-14 lead. Maranatha Baptist stunned Finlandia with eight straight points to take charge.

In the fourth set, the Sabercats got off to a 13-4 lead to end it early.

In the fifth set, the Lions went up 8-4 following a kill by freshman Kennedi Eldridge. MBU got four straight to tie it at 8-8. It was a war after that.

Wilson hammered the ball home to put FinnU at match point. Maranatha Baptist scored three straight points to end the match.

For Finlandia, Wilson had a strong night with a career-high 25 kills, 20 digs and hit .333. Sophomore Joslynn Perala had 11 kills and 31 digs. Freshman Anna Navarro had 41 assists and 17 digs.

For Maranatha Baptist, Mattie Bumpus had 18 kills and eight aces while Melanie Woller had 13 kills. Sarah Wright had 20 digs.

MSOE – L, 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-19)

In the first set, MSOE took command with a 14-5 at the start.

In the second set, the Raiders and Finlandia battled on even terms early. Perala came flying in from the outside and blasted the ball down the line to make it 12-10. MSOE reeled off a 10-1 burst to take control.

The third set saw the Lions show SISU. FinnU forced an error to take a 12-9 lead. The Raiders came back with a 9-4 run to lead 18-16. Wilson found the back corner to tie the game at 18-18. MSOE scored four straight to effectively end the match.

For Finlandia, Wilson had 10 kills and 10 digs. It was her eighth straight double-digit kill match and 10th overall.

For MSOE, Quinn Borchert had 11 kills and hit .769.

Finlandia remains on the road, Saturday, Sept. 25, taking on Alma and Olivet. The matches are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. EST, respectively.
