HOUGHTON — Houghton spread the scoring in a 67-40 win against Ontonagon on Thursday.

Five Gremlins players scored in double figures. Paige Sleeman led the team with 11 points. Annika Peterson, Gwen Markham, Stella Wickstrom, Meghan Trewhella each scored 10 points.

The Gremlins led 42-14 at halftime.

“Houghton came out hot in the first quarter and couldn’t catch back up,” Ontonagon head coach Tim Rotheaux said. “Hard game for three in four days. They are a good team.”

Houghton hosts Kingsford in the MHSAA Division 2 District 33 semifinals on Wednesday, while Ontonagon hosts the winner of Bessemer vs. Ironwood in the MHSAA Division 4 District 97 semifinals.

Boys: Ironwood 52, Ontonagon 41

IRONWOOD — Ironwood turned it on in the fourth quarter, overcoming a second-half deficit to beat Ontonagon on Thursday.

The Red Devils scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to complete a rally from a 35-29 deficit after three quarters.

“We took on a bigger team tonight and just seemed to fall apart at the end,” Ontonagon head coach Brittany Turin-Jilbert said. “Overall I thought we played a really balanced game until 5:00 left in the game. I’m not sure whether it was nerves or fatigue, but we started getting really lazy on defense, giving them driving looks and not boxing out on their misses.”

Ontonagon hosted Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, but the game ended after press time. The Gladiators host Baraga on Tuesday.

Bryce Buzzo led Ontonagon with 14 points. Luke Strasser and Ryan Preiss each had 10 points.
