Finlandia battles toe-to-toe against Polars

HANCOCK — It was 60 minutes of effort as the Finlandia University football team (0-4 UMAC, 0-8) lost 40-14 to Crown (2-1 UMAC, 2-5), Saturday afternoon at McAfee Field.

Crown wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just 49 seconds into the contest. On the following kickoff, sophomore Montez Archer returned it 53 yards. Three plays later, freshman Hunter Miles hit freshman Jordin Haley with a 24-yard touchdown strike. The extra point made it 7-6.

On their next drive, the Lions drove to the Polars 16-yard line before being stopped. Crown on the next possession got to the FinnU 1-yard line. Finlandia came up with four big plays to halt the Polars.

Crown scored three touchdowns in a 20-minute span to pull away.

Offensively, the Lions were 18-32 for 200 yards in the air. Freshman Hunter Miles caught four passes for 99 yards and ran for a touchdown.

Defensively, FinnU held Crown to 35 yards on the ground, the fourth lowest total in school history. Sophomore Jesse Hill had nine tackles and freshman Gabe Smith had eight tackles.
