Lions stun Lakers in exhibition match
SAULT STE. MARIE — The Finlandia Lions women’s basketball team used a 19-point third quarter to turn a five-point deficit at halftime into an exhibition victory over the Lake Superior State Lakers Saturday, 70-57.
The Lions got 29 points from Negaunee native Natalie Bartle, 12 from Calumet native Elli Djerf, and 10 from Katie Lundeen to earn the win.
Djerf from 5-of-10 from the floor and 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. Bartle was 9-of-23 while also going 3-of-4 on 3-pointers.
L’Anse native Majia Rice added seven points and two blocks. Martina Jahfetson, another L’Anse native, added seven points.
The Lakers got 17 points from Margo Woughter.
They led 14-10 after one quarter and 27-22 at the half before the Lions racked up 48 points in the second half, including an 11-point run in the fourth quarter, while holding the Lakers to 30.
The Lions outscored the Lakers in the paint 18-6.
