Finlandia plays tough against the Thunder

Lions drop second straight 4-1 decision

HANCOCK — The Finlandia University women’s hockey team (0-8 NCHA, 0-17) never stopped hustling in a 4-1 loss to the Trine Thunder (4-4 NCHA, 6-8), Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Just 40 seconds into the game, junior Jayde Pederson had a goal robbed by a great save. Sophomore Laney Pasemko made several strong saves to keep Trine off the board.

The Thunder managed to get a goal at the 11:41 mark. Trine scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the second period for a 3-0 lead.

With nine seconds left in the second, junior Lauren Benoit scored on a power play goal. The Thunder scored an insurance goal with 10:01 left in the game.

FinnU blocked 16 shots led by freshman Kennedi Johnson with three. Pasemko finished with 42 saves.

Lions fall at home Friday

HANCOCK — It was 60 minutes of SISU as the Lions lost 4-1 to the Thunder, Friday night at the Houghton County Arena.

The first period saw numerous great saves from Casey Frank and Pasemko.

At the 3:03 mark of the second period, freshman Tessa Deal scored off a pass from freshman Gracie Hall. That made it 1-0, Finlandia.

Trine came back with two goals in a two-minute span to lead 2-1. Junior Lauren Benoit had two bullets that were stopped by great plays in the final six minutes of the period.

Trine scored with 9:26 left in the game for a 3-1 lead. The Lions had several strong scoring chances that just missed. The Thunder got an insurance goal at the 17:22 mark.

On faceoffs, sophomore Michaela Powers had 12 wins and freshman Lauren Lacroix had eight. FinnU blocked 13 shots led by sophomore Arwen Sims with three. Pasemko finished with 44 saves.

Up next

Finlandia heads down state, Friday, Jan. 20, playing Adrian. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
