Lions men earn split with Vikings

Finlandia sinks the Vikings Saturday

HANCOCK – The gamut of emotions was on display as the Finlandia Lions men’s hockey team (2-9 NCHA, 3-14-1) took a hard-fought 6-5 win in overtime over Lawrence (2-9-1 NCHA, 3-14-2), Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Lawrence got the first strike at the 3:01 mark. Four minutes later, freshman Owen Schmidt tied the score at 1-1.

With 9:06 left in the opening period, freshman James Eng blasted one thru to put Finlandia up 2-1. The Lions controlled the game for the next 32 minutes.

A goal by sophomore Max Messier put FinnU up 5-1 with 16:44 to go.

The Vikings scored two power play goals; then with an extra attack in the final minute scored twice to silence the crowd and send it into overtime.

Just 1:39 into the extra period, senior Nate Holm made a nice move around the side of the net to score the game-winner.

This was the first win over Lawrence since Jan. 11, 2019.

On faceoffs, sophomore Nick Solema had 12 wins and Messier had 11 wins. Eng and Schmidt scored two goals each while freshman Matteo Ybarra had three assists. Sophomore Dakota Meyer finished with 32 saves.

Vikings shutout Lions men on Friday

HANCOCK – It was a valiant effort as the Lions lost 3-0 to the Vikings, Friday night at the Houghton County Arena.

At the 2:48 mark, junior Cooper Hoheisel fired a shot that was saved at the last moment. Lawrence drew first blood, scoring with 16:19 left in the period.

The Lions had several strong chances that were stopped by great plays. At the 15:21 mark, the Vikings went up 2-0.

In the second and third periods, Owen Carlson and Meyer put on a clinic with numerous amazing saves. Lawrence got an insurance goal with about eight minutes left.

On faceoffs, Messier had 15 wins and Solema had nine. Meyer finished with 31 saves.

Up next

Finlandia takes to the road, Friday, Jan. 27, taking on Milwauee School Of Enigineering. The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
