Finlandia keeps the Sea Gulls at bay

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — SISU was the story of the game as the Finlandia University women’s basketball team (12-11) beat Salisbury (7-19) 72-60, Thursday night at the William M. Anderson Center. This was a Coast-To-Coast Conference Championship Quarterfinal.

Finlandia came out blazing, getting to a 10-0 lead after six minutes.  Salisbury came back with an 18-3 run. That put the Sea Gulls up 18-13 with 7:26 left in the second quarter.

After halftime, the game followed a familiar script. One team would get up by six or more points; the other squad would storm back to lead by six or more.

With 4:01 left, junior Natalie Bartle hit a bucket to put the Lions up 64-54. Salisbury made one last run with six straight points to make it 64-60 at the 1:15 mark. FinnU scored the last eight points to seal the game.

For Finlandia, Bartle had 25 points and eight rebounds, sophomore Elli Djerf scored 16 points with three triples and junior Bethany Baldwin scored 13 points.

For Salisbury, Emily Dilger had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
