Finlandia softball opens season in Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. — The Finlandia Lions softball team (0-2) fell twice at the Blue Angel Dome Invite, Thursday night at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. The Lions lost 11-1 to Mount Mary (2-0) and 19-0 to Dominican (Ill.) (2-0).

Mount Mary

Finlandia got a runner on base in the first and second innings, but were unable to bring them home. Mount Mary scored 10 runs in the second and fourth innings to seal the win.

For Finlandia, senior Melanie Torres had two hits. Sophomore ShyAnn Vernam gave up eight hits, 11 runs with four earned, walked five and struck out one batter in five innings.

Dominican

Dominican scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back.

For Finlandia, sophomore Briana Gitchell gave up 18 hits, 16 runs, walked three and struck out one in 3.1 innings.

Finlandia closes out the tournament, Friday, Feb. 25, taking on Augustana (Ill.) and Elmhurst. The games are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
