Finlandia springs trap on Sabercats

WATERTOWN, Wis. — Freshman John Schutz broke a school record as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team (4-21) beat Maranatha Baptist (4-20) 82-65, Saturday afternoon at Sabercat Gym.

Finlandia came out on fire, taking a 17-7 lead at the 13:16 mark.  Maranatha Baptist came storming back with a 13-3 run to make it 20 with 6:39 to go. 

The rest of the half saw the Lions and Sabercats trading buckets.  In the second half, sophomore Logan Depew drained a triple to start a 16-4 run to seal the game.

For Finlandia, Schutz had 27 points with six triples, senior Danny Zuchak had 17 points, eight rebounds and seven steals and Depew scored 12 points.

Schutz hit .857% (6-of-7) on 3-pointers breaking the school record of .750.  That mark had been set by Jonathon Moore vs. UW-Oshkosh (Nov. 25, 2009) and Jordan LaPlante vs. Crown (Jan. 9, 2015).  Both players were 6-of-8.

For Maranatha Baptist, Caleb Moultrie had 18 points.

Finlandia has concluded the 2022-23 season.
