Lions softball falls twice on the road

PEORIA, Ill. — The Finlandia University softball team (0-4) lost twice at the Blue Angel Dome Invite, Friday at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex. The Lions played Augustana (Ill) and Elmhurst.

Augustana (Ill.) (4-2) – L, 14-0

Augustana scored nine runs over the first two innings to seal the game.

For Finlandia, sophomore Briana Gitchell (0-2) gave up nine hits, 14 runs with nine earned and walked three in four innings.

For Augustana, Nadia Ranieri (2-0) gave up two hits, walked two and struck out eight batters in three innings.

Elmhurst (2-0) – L, 11-0

Elmhurst struck first scoring in the first inning. In the bottom of the first, with two outs, senior Melanie Torres and freshman Ashlyn Christy singled. The Blue Jays got the second batter out to stop the threat.

Elmhurst picked up four more runs going into the sixth inning. Twice the Lions had two runners on but were unable to score runs. The Blue Jays scored six in the sixth inning to pull away.

For Finlandia, senior Elizabeth Ayala had two hits and stole two bases. Sophomore ShyAnn Vernam gave up 15 hits, 10 runs with nine earned and walked three and six innings.

For Elmhurst, Chiara O’Leary had four hits. In the circle, O’Leary (1-0) threw a five-hitter, walked one and struck out one in six innings.

Finlandia is off until Saturday, Mar. 4, taking on Grinnell and Macalester. The games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
