BESSEMER — The Bessemer Speedboys boys basketball team lived up to its name of the basketball court Thursday as they jumped out to a 13-4 lead against the visiting Ontonagon Gladiators and never looked back in route to a 60-52 victory.

Gladiators coach Brittany Turin-Jilbert summed it up best.

“A slow start hurt us in the long run. We were super stagnant in offense the first half and to start the third quarter,” she said. “We weren’t running our offense properly which didn’t give us many good opportunities to score.”

The Speedboys led 28-12 at the halfway point. The Gladiators outscored them 26-16 in the fourth, but is was too late.

“Finally we sparked a run late in the game to get within six, after being down by 20 points,” she said, “but they were able to seal it with free throws.”

Ontonagon finished the regular season 7-15. They look to extend their season against Ewen in the district opener on Monday in Ironwood.
