Tech men’s basketball tabbed fifth in GLIAC Preseason Poll
HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has been tabbed to finish fifth in the GLIAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll, the league office announced Tuesday. In the same release, sophomore Dan Gherezgher was named to the Preseason All-GLIAC First Team.
The Huskies earned 45 votes, behind Parkside, Grand Valley State, Northern Michigan and Ferris State.
The Black and Gold will look to build off of last year’s campaign, where the Huskies made it to the GLIAC Championship game despite an overall record of 10-20 and 5-13 in conference play. Head coach Josh Buettner saw first year guard Dan Gherezgher earn Second Team All-GLIAC honors in his third year at the helm of his alma mater.
MTU returns 11 student-athletes from a season ago with an addition of a recruiting class of four freshmen.
The 2023-24 season opens on the road for the Huskies traveling to the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament on Nov. 11-12. Michigan Tech Opens the tournament facing Missouri S&T at 4 p.m. on Saturday before facing Upper Iowa on Sunday for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
GHEREZGHER HONORED BY GLIAC
Davenport redshirt junior guard Marcedus Leech Jr. was selected as the 2023-24 GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year. Leech Jr. had a breakout campaign a season ago, averaging 20 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the floor and nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc. The Caruthersville, Mo. native was named First Team All-GLIAC and Second Team All-Region (D2CCA).
Joining Leech Jr. on the All-GLIAC First Team is Ferris State graduate guard Ben Davidson, Michigan Tech sophomore guard Dan Gherezgher, Grand Valley State graduate forward Marius Grazulis and Northern Michigan redshirt sophomore forward Dylan Kuehl.
Honored on the All-GLIAC Second Team was Davenport redshirt senior guard Myles Belyeu, Saginaw Valley State senior guard Tre Garrett, Saginaw Valley State junior guard Freddie McIntosh, Parkside redshirt junior forward Colin O’Rourke and Northern Michigan sophomore guard Max Weisbrod.
