Bulldogs hockey earns win over Hawks, 5-2

HANCOCK — A three-goal second period was just what the Hancock Bulldogs hockey team needed to earn a 5-2 win over the Saginaw Heritage Hawks Saturday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena.

Todd Kilpela picked up assists on all three second-period goals to help lead the Bulldogs to the win.

Max Heinonen broke the scoreless tie 11:40 into the first period when he scored shorthanded.

The Hawks evened things just 3:16 into the middle frame, only to have Bennett Sturos strike at 7:34 to regain the one-goal lead. Kilpela and Brady Axford both assisted on the goal.

Tyler Axford scored 3:13 later to push the lead to 3-1 when he struck. Kipela and co-captain Bryce Hanner assisted on the tally.

The third Bulldogs’ goal of the period was scored on the power play when Tevin Stukel scored at 16:21. Kilpela and co-captain Luke Mikkola picked up the two assists on the goal.

The game remained 4-1 in favor of Hancock until the Hawks struck with 44 seconds left on the power play. Mikkola then answered on the power play with three seconds left in the contest to seal the win. Bryce Vanderwest earned the lone assist.
