GLADIATORS LOSE TO SPEEDBOYS

ONTONAGON — The Ontonogan Gladiators boys basketball team opened their basketball season with a 57-45 loss to the visiting Bessemer Speedboys on Thursday.

The Speedboys had the hot hand in the first two quarters sinking seven triples to make it a 34-19 lead at halftime.

“We were just a little slow on our rotations and they made it hurt by not missing many from outside,” said Gladiators’ coach Brittney Turin-Jilbert. “I thought we just seemed a little flustered offensively, especially the first half with some first game jitters. We finally settled in the second half, but the deficit was too much for us to come back from.”

The Gladiators’ best quarters were the second and fourth where they scored 16 points. However, it was too little too late.

“Jack Nelson did a good job stepping up and leading us in the scoring column with 18 points,” Turin-Jilbert added. “I give my kids credit, though, as they fought to the end.”
