Houghton girls top Marquette, 56-42

HOUGHTON — Powered by 17 points and seven assists from Jacey Sleeman, the Houghton Gremlins girls defeated Marquette Thursday night at the Houghton Gym, 56-42.

Danica Ryynanen, who scored eight points on the night, had five in the first quarter to help lift Houghton to 14-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

In the second quarter, Sleeman caught fire, hitting three 3-pointers to help her team score 12 points and lead 26-23 at the half. She added two more 3-pointers in the second half.

Marquette pulled within two, 38-36, by the end of the third quarter. Kyley Emblad had four of her team-high 12 points in the quarter.

Looking to bounce back, Houghton did so in the fourth, thanks, in part, to five points from Roman Trevino Peterlin and five from Sleeman. In total, the Gremlins outscored Marquette 18-6 over the final eight minutes of play.

Eva Gerard finished her night with 11 points and nearly had a double-double with eight rebounds. Trevino Peterlin finished with 10 points.
