Copper Kings softball sweeps Flivvers

KINGSFORD — The Calumet Copper Kings softball team scored 15 runs in the opening game of a doubleheader against the Kingsford Flivvers Tuesday night en route to a win. In the nightcap, they followed that up with 17 runs to earn a sweep, 15-3, 17-7.

In the first game, the Copper Kings led 2-1 after one inning and then exploded for six runs in the second. They added to more runs over the next two innings before scoring five in the sixth.

Pitcher Lena Myhren had a huge game, going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and three runs scored. One of her three hits was a home run. In the pitcher’s circle, she struck out two and surrendered five hits over six innings.

Chloe Coppo when just 1-for-3 at the plate, but that one hit was a home run. She knocked in five runs, walked twice, and scored a run.

Bella Coppo went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored twice.

Seven out the nine hitters in the Calumet lineup had at least one hit in the game, and all nine batters scored at least one run.

In the nightcap, the Copper Kings jumped out to a 5-0 lead in first inning. They led 7-1 before the Flivvers stormed back with six in the bottom of the third. Calumet then scored the game’s last 10 runs over the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.

Bella Coppo was the offensive leader for Calumet, going 3-for-4 at the plate, walking once, knocking in three and scoring twice. One of her three hits was a home run.

Kaylee Newsom went 2-for-4 at the plate, walking once, knocking in two, and scoring once. In the pitcher’s circle, she got the start, striking out one, walking two and giving up six hits in three innings.

Myhren came in to relieve Newsom in the fourth, and she held the Flivvers to just two hits over the final three innings. At the plate, she knocked in a home run while going 3-for-5 with three RBi and two runs scored.

All nine Copper Kings batters came away with at least one hit, and all nine scored at least one run in the game.

The Copper Kings are back in action Friday at home when they host Marquette with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
