Gremlins softball sweeps Flivvers

KINGSFORD — With an eight-run first inning Friday, the Houghton Gremlins softball team cruised to a 14-4 win in the opening game of a doubleheader at Kingsford. In the nightcap, the Gremlins got a huge effort out of Clea Ollanketo, who collected four hits as they topped the Flivvers again, 15-2.

Stella Soumis was great in the pitcher’s circle for the Gremlins in the opener, striking out seven and only giving up five hits and three walks. At the plate, she had one hit and drew two walks to help the Gremlins’ offense.

The top six hitters in the Gremlins’ lineup all scored two runs each in the game. Ollanketo went 1-for-3 and drew a walk, along with scoring twice. Romi Mattson walked three times, had one hit, and scored twice. Kenzie Collard went 2-for-4, scoring both times she got on base.

Farah Zapolnik went 1-for-3 at the plate, but also knocked in a pair of runs while scoring twice. Aydra Williamson went 1-for-3 at the plate, but also scored twice. Delaney Salmi went 1-for-2 and drew a walk while scoring twice.

Lexi Burns was the only Gremlins starter who did not collect a hit, but she did get on base by drawing a walk.

In the second game, Ollanketo went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two knocked in.

Zapolnik scored three times, going 1-for-2 and drawing a pair of walks. Mattson went 2-for-5 and scored twice. Salmi went 2-for-2, drew a walk, knocked in three and scored twice.

Soumis went 2-for-3 at the plate, drew a walk, scored once, and knocked in four runs.

Burns went 1-for-2 with two walks and she scored twice.

Emmy Pietila was the only Gremlins starter to not collect a hit, yet she earned an RBI in the contest.

Mattson gave up two runs in five innings in the pitcher’s circle. She racked up three strikeouts and walked four while giving up six hits.
