Gremlins softball wins one of three in Pulaski

PULASKI, Wis. — The Houghton Gremlins softball team traveled to Pulaski, Wisconsin, Saturday for a tournament. In the opening game, they topped the Coleman Cougars, 10-0. They then lost to the host Pulaski Red Raiders, 12-3, and to the Menasha Bluejays, 10-2.

Stella Soumis was a big reason for the Gremlins’ victory over the Cougars as she threw a no-hitter. She also struck out 10.

Clea Ollanketo got the Gremlins going by drawing a walk to open the game. She scored two batters later on a defensive error.

In the third, Romi Mattson singled to right field to lead off. She was moved to third two batters later when Brynn Arko lined one to center field. Soumis sacrificed to score Mattson.

The inning continued with Fayah Zapolnik singling to left field. Arko scored on the play. Before the play was over, a defensive error allowed Zapolnik to advance to third. She then scored on another error, making it 4-0.

Emmy Pietila singled and then scored two batters later on a single by Lexi Burns, giving the Gremlins a five-run lead before the third ended.

Ollanketo led off the fourth by reaching first on a defensive error. Two batters later, she scored with Soumis at the plate. Mattson, who had followed Ollanketo, also reached on a defensive error. She then scored when Pietila singled to center. Soumis scored when Aydra Williamson singled to center field, putting Houghton up 8-0.

In the fifth, OIlanketo walked to lead off. Mattson then followed with a walk of her own.Arko doubled to left field to bring Ollanketo home. Soumis then sacrificed to bring Mattson home and give the Gremlins a 10-run advantage.

Soumis finished the game off in the bottom of the fifth by striking out the first two batters and then forcing a fly out.

In their second game of the day, the Gremlins jumped all over the Red Raiders in the top of the first inning, but then surrendered 12 runs over the next three and a half innings.

Mattson got things started with a one-out single to center in the top of the first inning. Soumis then singled to third. Arko brought Mattson home with a double to right field. Before the play ended, Soumis scored on an error.

Arko later scored when Zapolnik doubled to center, making it 3-0 Houghton.

Soumis took the loss in the pitcher’s circle as she struck out two, walked two, but gave up 16 hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Against Menasha in the third game, the Gremlins again jumped out to an early lead, 2-0, but the Bluejays scored the game’s next 10 runs to earn the win.

Ollanketo got Houghton started with a double to left field. Two batters later, Kenzie Collard singled to third. Arko brought both of them home with a triple to right field.

Mattson struggled in the pitcher’s circle, striking out three, walking four and giving up three hits in three innings of work. Ellie Hainault pitched an inning in relief, giving up three hits and one walk.

UP NEXT

Houghton was schedule to be back in action Monday when they were supposed to face Calumet at home.
