Jets baseball earns win over Bulldogs

HANCOCK — In a baseball game that was scheduled late Tuesday afternoon, the Jeffers Jets rode the hot arm of Cody Turner to a 2-1 victory over the Hancock Bulldogs at the Hancock Driving Park.

Turner was outstanding on the mound, striking out 13, walking one and scattering five hits over seven innings of work.

For Hancock (7-2 overall), Caleb Isaacson and Bryce Hanner did what they could to match Turner. Isaacson struck out seven and walked one while giving up four hits over four innings. Hanner, in relief, went three innings, striking out three, walking two and giving up one hit.

The Jets struck first in the top of the first inning. Chase Kinnunen led off with a single on a fly ball to left field. After Trayton Helminen sacrificed to move Kinnunen to third, the Jets scored when Levi Frahm singled to left field.

Hancock, looking to respond, did not take long to do so. Hanner reached first on a dropped third strike to get things started. Benny Keranen followed with a single. After Todd Kilpela walked, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded. Luke Mikkola then hit a ground ball and reached first on a defensive error, which allowed Hanner to score to tie things at 1-1.

The game remained even until the third. Helminen doubled to center to lead off the top half of the inning. Turner then hit a ball into center field, and he got to first base on a defensive error. He also advanced to second on the play and Helminen scored before things came to a close.

From there, neither team could capitalize again before the final out was recorded.
