Smooth sailing: Lakes track wins again at regionals at home

LAKE LINDEN — Gary Gusfriedi has been around the Lake Linden-Hubbell track team for many years. As the girls’ coach, he has seen a lot of winning teams, and this year’s squad is no different.

On Monday, they completed a perfect season of wins (6-0) and this one really counted. They came in first, as did the boys, at the MHSAA U.P. Division 3 Region 47 meet. The meet serves as a final qualifier for U.P. Finals on June 1 in Kingsford.

“This is a special group that works hard, and it has paid off,” noted Gusfriedi.

The Lakes’ girls won with a score of 59 points. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City came in second with 46. Ontonagon and Ewen -Trout Creek tied for third at 23.

The Lakes’ boys did equally well with a first-place score of 64.

Second place went to Bessemer with 45 points, and Wakefield-Marenisco tied with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City for a third-place finish at 16.

At regionals, the top four individual finishers for each event qualify for the finals, and, in the relays, it is just the top two teams. Brett Gervais, coach of the Lake-Linden Hubbell boys’ team said that the Lakes (boys) will be well represented at the upcoming Kingsford finals.

“We qualified in all events except the 1600-meter run,” he said.

He related that big point-grabbers on Monday included Gabe Popko, Matthew Jokela and Josh Daavettila.

Popko won both the discus and shot put. Daavettila placed first with a 5-feet, 8-inch leap in the high jump and Matthew Jokela sprinted his way to the top spot in the 200 and 400-meter dashes.

“Matthew has continued to take care in his events,” said his coach. “He was the key anchor in the 800-meter relay today. As for Josh, he does a great job as a jumper and his personal best of 17-feet,1-inch in the long jump, and his great high jump were key for us.”

Gusfreidi said that junior Emily Jokela sets the standard for the girls’ side.

“We follow her lead,” he said with a smile. “Her middle name is consistency. She has four events and does well at them meet in and meet out.”

Monday was no exception. She placed first in the 100 and 400-meter dashes and in the 300-meter hurdles. She came in second in the 200-meter dash.

He added that Maddy Dudenas had a great day at shot put with a winning throw of 30 feet. Teammate Cleo Milkey won the long jump by five inches and Abi Codere soared high with a 9-feet, 8-inch effort in the pole vault – more than 20 inches greater than the second-place finisher, Elisa Delene of Baraga at 8-feet.

“Each season, we mark as a goal to peak at regionals,” noted Gusfriedi. “We did that again this year. Add to that we’ve beaten Houghton twice, and that has been nice. I don’t remember that last time that happened. It has been a really, really nice group to coach this year.”
