Tech soccer downs St. Cloud State 1-0 in season opener
ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Michigan Tech Huskies soccer team opened the season on the road with a 1-0 victory over St. Cloud State on Thursday night. With the win, Michigan Tech is now 4-2-1 against St. Cloud State at Husky Stadium.
“I am extremely proud of this group,” coach Melissa Kuhar mentioned. “It was a battle from kickoff and we came out and played Tech soccer. Our girls dug deep and found a way to score. We stuck to our game plan and were able to create a lot on the attacking side of the ball throughout both halves.
“A huge shout out to our back line and goalkeeper as well for getting the shutout and keeping a solid SCSU team scoreless. This team is special and this is the first of many wins. We did it as a group and will continue to do so. I am beyond blessed to coach this team.”
In an absolute defensive clash, neither team would find the back of the net for the first 75 minutes of action. Both teams traded five shots in the opening frame with MTU having a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. SCSU had a chance off of a corner kick in the second half although Linsey Trapino’s rebound shot went wide of the net.
Sophomore Reilly Lovercheck recorded her first career game-winning goal in the 76th minute, burying a centering pass by Taylor Noble – her third assist of her career.
Bri Barrows made the first start of her career in net for the Black and Gold and earned her first clean sheet of the season making three saves.
Taylor Noble led the Huskies with two shots on goal joining Emilie Clayton as the lone Huskies to play the entire 90 minutes.
St. Cloud State had three players with one shot on goal: Ellie Primerano, Gracie Parsons and Grace Olson. Meriel Orham made two saves in net for SCSU.
