Huskies play to scoreless draw at No. 19 Lakers

ALLENDALE — The Michigan Tech Huskies soccer team held No. 19-ranked Grand Valley State to a scoreless draw to conclude the regular season.

With the draw, Michigan Tech moves to 6-10-1 overall to claim the eighth seed in the GLIAC Tournament, while No. 19 Grand Valley State finished the regular season 11-1-6 and 8-1-5 in the loop. The draw earned Grand Valley State the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

“Super proud of our team today. Getting a result to close out the regular season is a huge momentum boost for us. I challenged the team to empty their tanks and give everything they had and they did just that. I couldn’t ask for more,” Huskies coach Melissa Kuhar said. “GVSU was fighting to win the conference, which resulted in them pushing numbers forward. Huge props to Bri (Barrows) and the backline for getting the clean sheet! Bri played out of her mind today and kept us in the game countless times.

“Again so proud of this group and Tuesday starts a ‘new’ season.”

The Huskies were overproduced offensively as the Lakers accrued 25-10 in shots and 14-4 on goal, also sustaining an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks. However, the Black and Gold came up big time after time, earning their third tie at the GVSU Soccer Field in program history.

Barrows, a junior goalkeeper, was a force in the net for the Black and Gold, making a career-high 14 saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

Veteran attackers Julia Pietila and Kiersen Korienek were the only Huskies to register shots, with Pietila taking six shots with two on goal, as Korienek recorded four shots and two on target.
