Bulldogs softball bats come alive in sweep of Miners

HANCOCK — The Hancock Bulldogs softball team kept its recent hot streak going with a pair of wins Monday over the Gogebic Miners at the Hancock Driving Park. With the two wins, 10-2 and 11-1, the Bulldogs are 10-3 since getting swept by the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes on April 30.

In the opener, pitcher Sadie Biekkola was strong in the pitcher’s circle, striking out eight, walking one and giving up seven hits in seven innings of work. At the plate, she helped herself by going 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

Third baseman Lucy Biekkola and second baseman Romey Koskela both went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored each.

All but one Bulldogs hitter scored a run.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, the Bulldogs got jumpstarted by a single to center field by Brooke Koskela. Sadie Biekkola reached on an error and got all the way to third on the play while Koskela scored to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

They carried that lead into the third. First baseman Alice Larson reached on an error to lead off. Two batters later, shortstop Kaelyn Rouleau reached on an error, and Larson scored. Brooke Koskela then tripled to right field, scoring Rouleau. Sadie Biekkola doubled, scoring Koskela at the same time.

Lucy Biekkola then singled. With runners on the corners, Romey Koskela singled to center, scoring Sadie Biekkola. Right fielder Emily L’Esperance hit into a fielder’s choice. Both Koskela and L’Esperance scored on a fly ball hit by Diem Kilpela. Kilpela did reach safely thanks to an error.

Gogebic got two runs back in the top of the fourth to make it 7-2 at that point.

In the bottom half of the inning, however, Hancock got back to work.
