LAKE LINDEN — With two inside-the-park home runs from Emily Jokela, one in each game of a doubleheader, the Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes rolled to a pair of 10-0 wins over the Ironwood Red Devils Tuesday at the Boneyard.

Not only was Jokela good at the plate, where she went 3-for-4 in the opening game with the home run, and 3-for-3 in the nightcap, with another home run, and while also reaching base a fourth time, she also struck out 18 in the opening game in the pitcher’s circle.

If that wasn’t impressive enough on its own, Payton Goldsworthy went 2-for-2 in the opener with three runs scored and a walk,, and then 2-for-3 in the nightcap with another walk and three runs scored. She also struck out 14 batters over six innings.

“I thought we played pretty good and our pitching was on tonight,” said Lakes coach Curtis Kinnunen. “I mean, those two were pitching lights out tonight, and Kyara (Mills) did a good job catching today, too, so this is good to see.”

In the opening game, the Lakes got hits from seven of the 10 batters who came to the plate. In the nightcap, eight of the nine hitters got on base.

“We’re going to need everybody to be hitting,” Kinnunen said. “We can’t just depend on our top four or five or six to hit. We need the bottom lineup to hit, too, and get on base.”

With depth at the plate and two pitchers throwing strikeouts, things feel good for the Lakes at the moment.

“I think we’re playing pretty well right now,” said Kinnunen. “A couple of things we got to work on with the newer girls that have never played before, but they’re coming along.”

After Jokela struck out the side in the top of the first inning in the first game, shortstop Cleo Milkey tripled to right field. With Jokela at the plate, Milkey scored on a passed ball. Two batters later, third baseman Payton Goldsworthy drew a walk. She stole second before first baseman Alli Corrigan singled to left field, scoring Goldsworthy and putting the Lakes up, 2-0.

In the top of the third, the Red Devils strung together something after a walk by Abigail Sterbenz and Hanna Vaughn reaching first on an error. However, three strikeouts in a row ended the threat.

In the bottom of the third, the Lakes’ offense was back at it.

Center fielder Ashlyn Steeves drew a lead off walk. Milkey then reached on an error. A passed ball with Jokela at the plate allowed Steeves to score. Jokela then singled, putting runners on the corners. A passed ball with Goldsworthy at the plate allowed both runners to score and suddenly the Lakes led 5-0.

Goldsworthy then doubled to the center field fence. Corrigan sacrificed to move Goldsworthy to third. She then scored on a passed ball with Mills at the plate, giving Lake Linden a 6-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth, the Red Devils threatened again as Whitney Ruotsala was hit by a pitch, and Natalie Vandenburg singled to right field. Two straight strikeouts ended the threat.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the Lakes found their scoring touch again.

Steeves was hit by a pitch to lead off. Milkey hit a sacrifice to move Steeves to third after she stole second. Jokela then singled, which brought Steeves home. Jokela stole second before Goldsworthy doubled to the center field fence, bringing Jokela home. Goldworthy then scored on a passed ball with Corrigan at the plate.

The game remained 9-0 in favor of the Lakes into the bottom of the sixth. After Milkey flew out in the lead off spot, Jokela came to the plate looking to get on base. She ripped a line drive down the right field line and never even looked back. She rounded all three bases and crossed home plate before the throw from the outfield got home, scoring the final run of the contest.

In the nightcap, the Red Devils served as the home team. Neither team could get anything going offensively until the third inning.

With one out, Milkey singled to right field. Jokela then followed with a single of her own to right. With Goldsworthy at the plate, Milkey scored on a passed ball. Goldsworthy drew a walk. A passed ball allowed her to get to second and Jokela to score with Corrigan at the plate. Corrigan then singled to center field, scoring Goldsworthy and the Lakes led 3-0.

The game remained that way until the top of the fifth. After Milkey reached on an error to lead off, Jokela stepped to the plate. She rattled off her second inside-the-park home run, and putting her team up 5-0.

Goldsworthy then singled to left field. She stole second and then got to third on an error. Corrigan nearly brought her home with a long fly ball to the center field fence, but the Red Devils’ Jada Godfrey got to it and made the catch. Mills then singled to center field, scoring Goldsworthy.

Ironwood threatened in the bottom half of the inning as Vandenburg singled and Sterbenz walked, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.

With one out in the sixth, the Lakes buckled down, determined to close the game out.

Steeves reached on an error while attempting a bunt. Milkey then singled to center. A passed ball put both of them into scoring position for Jokela. She reached on an error, scoring Steeves.

Goldsworthy then doubled to the center field fence, scoring both Milkey and Jokela. Goldsworthy then stole third. Corrigan reached on an error, scoring the runner and putting Lake Linden up at that point, 10-0.

With one last chance in the bottom half of the sixth, Goldsworthy slammed the door shut with three straight strikeouts.
